How to Go From Blonde to Red

Beachy blond waves and Molly Sims are undoubtedly a match made in heaven. Recently, the actress went red with the help of Nexxus celebrity color expert Aura Friedman. Together, these ladies proved that prepping hair is just as important as the color itself to achieve the best results.

Prepping Her Hair
“I did a lot of conditioning treatments on my hair before the transformation as well as this DIY coconut oil mask I do (I put it on my hair and then cover my head with a plastic bag for 15 minutes) because, as a blond, my hair gets dry. I also stopped coloring it the last month or so to give my hair a break. I think that really helped make a difference.”

Maintaining The Color
“I only wash my hair three times per week. I use the Nexxus Color Assure line—especially the Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer—every time I shampoo my hair. The primer has helped prevent my color from fading so I can extend the time between touch-ups. Volumizing prep spray and dry shampoo are must-haves.”

Product Pick: Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, $18, ulta.com
“You put this onto dry hair before you wash your hair to seal out everything that can strip away your color. It really makes my color last longer. You can tell it works because you don’t see color at the bottom of the shower when you wash your hair.”

The Decision To Go Red
What Molly Says: “I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to change my hair color or do a drastic cut—I just knew that I wanted to do something totally different. I’ve been almost every hair color at some point in my life except for red. I tore out tons of pictures from magazines of the shades I liked and I tried on a bunch of wigs. Once I made the decision
to go red, I made it happen.”

What Her Colorist Says:
“I took into consideration Molly’s skin tone, hair color and eyebrows. She has a lot of golden tones in her skin so I didn’t want her hair to be too dark since she’s used to being a blond. I thought it would be great to have the lightness and dimension that blonds have but with more copper and apricot tones,”
says Friedman.
