When the temperatures rise, the self-tanners come out. Hey, we all want to look our best in those bikinis, right? There is, however, just one obstacle that can come between you and a perfect tan—your eyebrows. Luckily, Natalie Plain, the founder of Billion Dollar Brows is here to solve some common tanning dilemmas.

First of all, Plain says never to wax your eyebrows and tan on the same day. “Spray tans can take up to 24 hours to develop,” says Plain. “If you get your brows waxed while your spray tan is setting on your face, it will exfoliate the skin and, in turn, remove the color you applied with your spray tan.”

But if you did wax your brows shortly after a tan, or just have different skin colors around your eyebrows after a vacation, use a bronzer. “Exfoliate the portion of your skin that is not tan, and apply moisturizer,” says Plain. “Use bronzer or sunless tanner to blend your skin tone in short, measured amounts.”

Another common problem with using synthetic tanning products is that they can sometimes leave your eyebrows with a reddish tint. “The chemicals in spray tan sometimes stick to hair, which is why most women use coverings to protect the hair on their head,” says Plain. To avoid this problem, apply Vaseline on your eyebrows beforehand. You can also exfoliate your eyebrows afterwards and apply lemon juice to remove and tanner residue.

How do you protect your eyebrows from tanning mishaps?
