Lash Washes Are Officially a Thing

Think about all the elements our lashes come into contact with on a daily basis—face wash, mascara, lash boosters, lash glue and falsies, and who knows what else—and it comes as no surprise that some really smart beauty industry vets decided to take the basic concept of facial cleansing and apply it to the eyelashes. “Lashes are more popular than ever before, and cleanliness and hygiene are a very important aspect of a positive lash experience,” says Sahara Lotti, founder of Lashify. “Gunky lashes are funky and a big no-no.”

Sure, makeup remover can remove some of the makeup, like mascara and shadow fall out, that adheres to lashes, but the grit and grime doesn’t always get wiped away. And that’s wear these specialized cleansers come in. Different from makeup remover, lash cleansers go one step further to lift away all the dirt, lint, grime, bacteria and oil that like to call the eyelashes home. And, because not every facial cleanser out there can be used on and around the eyes, those that are made exclusively for the lashes are probably your best bet.

Products like BeautyGarde Lash & Brow Shampoo ($15), Borboleta Lash Bath ($15) and RevitaLash Cosmetics Micellar Water Lash Wash ($36) are just a few of the latest crop of lash-centric cleansers that are designed exclusively for the fringe. Safe for natural lashes and extensions, these products get in between every nook and cranny to remove whatever may be lurking in your lash line. And, no tugging, pulling or excessive rubbing is necessary to get the lashes squeaky-clean.

While it’s key to keep your lashes clean, you don’t want to overdo it. “Cleanse once every few days,” says Lotti. “Any more than that can break down some of the bonds.” And no one wants that.
