Move over hair and eyelash extensions: There’s a newish fuller-follicle contender in town, and it’s taking on sparse eyebrows. We caught up with the beautiful-brow experts to give us the lowdown on the trend, how it works and who exactly performs it—plus tips for getting thicker brows if you just aren’t ready to try it.

Bunk or Beautiful?
Sure, bold, beautiful brows are in, but, like pretty much any newish beauty treatment, we had to ask: Are brow extensions a legitimate trend or just a fad? “I think it’s a legitimate trend, but I’m not sure if it will develop the audience of lash extensions,” celeb brow expert Ramy Gafni says. New York brow specialist Sabria Celaj agrees. “Personally, I believe brow extensions aren’t necessary. The look of a fuller brow can be achieved with a good shape and the right brow pencil or with brow tinting, which really defines your brow hair and lasts about four-to-six weeks. However, if the extensions will make you feel more comfortable and confident, there’s no reason not to get them done!”

How Do They Work?
According to Gafni, hairs (typically synthetic) are either individually glued to sparse areas of the brows or sometimes a brow-shaped weave is glued onto the entire brow.

Who Is Getting Them?
Umbreen Sheikh, CEO and founder of Wink Brow Bar, says brow extensions still rank as a super popular treatment since the bar started offering them three-plus years ago—for a variety of reasons. “They are great for people who have no eyebrow hair (chemo patients, people with alopecia). For purely cosmetic reasons, the eyebrow extension trend picked up traction three years ago, ever since fuller eyebrows became the new thing. A prime celebrity example of bold brows is supermodel Cara Delevingne. For women who have over-plucked their eyebrows, this is an instant quick fix. Also, most women’s brows are not symmetrical. Brow extensions are a way to make sure that the shape and thickness are perfectly matched.”

Sheikh says they’re also a good option for events like weddings. “The age span for brow extensions is vast, from younger women to older women. Younger women may do it because they want to be en trend, but more mature women will often do it because they realize that more youthful-looking brows are a much-less expensive version of a  ‘facelift.’ The correct size, shape, and color of a brow can completely open up a woman’s eye and change the shape of her face for a more flattering and youthful shape. And the beauty of them is that they are not permanent—if something needs to be tweaked, you can always discuss your specifications and aesthetic goals with your technician on your next appointment.”

Who Should You Go To?
Gafni recommends only considering having brow extensions applied by someone who does it on a daily basis and comes highly recommended. (There’s also formal training programs for it and we’ve seen workshops popping up in big cities across the country.) But, be warned: You might be going as often as every two weeks for touch-ups.

How Else Can I Get The Look?
Gafni readily admits he is not a big advocate of these extensions because he believes even the skimpiest brows can be enhanced to look more substantial with proper brow-shaping and the correct brow filler—he offers these tips if you are looking to enhance your brows faster: “Brush through your brows daily, which massages the skin beneath them to stimulate blood flow and hair growth, eat more protein (the building block for hair) and take a good multivitamin with biotin and zinc consistently. Also, the fastest way to grow in your brows is to stop removing hairs—really and truly, let them grow. People are always shocked by how fast and full their brows grow in once they stop ‘just removing the strays.’” Celaj is also committed to the supplement route. “Taking a biotin/collagen supplement is incredibly helpful, and, as an added benefit, supports nail growth and healthy skin. Putting a lash thickener, such as Dr. Lara Devgan Premium Long Lash ($150) can also support more noticeable growth.”
