One surefire way to achieve a younger-looking appearance is with wide-open eyes, as we can see with actress Rose McGowan, who looked stunning during amfAR’s Inspiration Gala last weekend (at right). While a sultry squint is alluring, we think her perfectly shaped brows with just the right hightlights make her look years younger. Here are three ways you can achieve more youthful-looking eyes:

At-home solution: When taming your eyebrows, start thinning them a bit at the natural arch, but don’t go too thin at the ends or you’ll create a harsh, even angry look. If your brows thin too much before they get to your temple, use a brow pencil that is a bit lighter than your natural brow color to fill it in and create a complete brow look. When applying eyeshadow, finish with a shimmery (not glittery or frosty) highlighter right at the arch. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference it makes. We cannot stop experimenting with Topshop Make Up’s brand new Glow.

In-office fix: As the skin ages, it loses its volume and sags. We see this in the lower part of the face, as jowls form, but also in the sensitive skin of the eyelid. Drooping eyelids can prematurely age you or make you look tired when you’re filled with pep. A skilled, board-certified facial plastic surgeon can adjust the skin on your eyelid by making an incision at your natural crease and removing the extra fat and skin. He or she may also be able to address frown lines between the brows at the same time. Within a few weeks you’ll be healed and looking as bright-eyed as you feel.

Non-invasive approach: Ulthera, an ultrasound device, is FDA-approved for tightening the upper-eye skin. It utilizes sound waves to boost the skin below the surface–without surgery or injections. It’s painful during the procedure, but only requires one or two visits (versus three to five with other laser or light procedures), and there’s no downtime. The end results take a few months to fully realize as new skin-supporting collagen replaces the old.
