Summer is all about embracing bold and fun colors, whether it’s the clothes you wear or your makeup. One trend that always screams summer is the orange lip. “Orange lipstick is an amazing color that can be worn by anyone,” explains celebrity makeup artist Robert Sesnek, whose clientele includes models Chrissy Tiegen and Lily Aldridge. “The key to wearing the perfect orange lip is finding the right shade and opacity.” Here are his tips on how to wear it best:

A Creamy Lip Color
If you want to take this lip color all the way, make sure you don’t overdo it with the rest of your makeup. “If you choose to wear an orange that is more opaque and vivid, ‘which is very on trend,’ definitely keep the rest of your makeup very soft and minimal so you don’t have makeup overload,” says Sesnek. “Focus on one other feature such as lashes or brows for balance and symmetry.” He recommends NARS Timanfaya Satin Lip Pencil ($26) and Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Delicious ($34).

A Flirty Gloss
Going with an orange lip gloss makes this trend easy to wear. “This looks amazing with a tan or some sun and gives the right amount of pop,” Sesnek says. Because it’s so sheer and wearable, you can have fun with other makeup products without looking crazy. His favorite? Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro in #302 ($34).

Get Stained
If you just want a kiss of orange, a lip stain like YSL Stain in Juicy Peach ($36) is the way to go. Sesneck suggests using your finger to apply it for a soft, worn look. Because the color is so light, you can play up your other features like your cheeks or eyes.

Complement Your Skin Tone
So how do you find the shade that complements you and your skin tone?
·      Fair complexions: Choose a sheer, orange/coral shade with cool undertones.
·      Medium complexions: An orange lip color with yellow undertones and a satin finish will look great.
·      Olive complexions: Because this complexion already has warm undertones, go for a rich orange shade.
·      Darker complexions: Any shade of orange from sheer to bright coral will work for these skin tones.
