While we all may love summer, our hair doesn’t always feel the same. These hot and sticky summer days make curly hair hard to manage and style. Don’t let summer weather make you want to hide your hair, though. Instead follow these five tips from Tresemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu to get your summer dream look.
Don’t Overwash
“Curly hair should be washed about every two to three days with a low sulfate shampoo and conditioner to avoid drying out the curls,” says Syfu. Her pick? The Tresemmé Naturals Collection, which gently cleanses and hydrates hair with avocado oil. After showering, use a wide-tooth comb to brush hair and blot hair with a towel.
Control the Frizz
Have you ever wondered what humidity actually does to curly hair? Well, it swells strands and opens the cuticle to create frizz, leaving little definition to curls and a fluffy appearance. The best way to control curls during humid months? Syfu recommends applying a styling gel or cream to damp hair to give curls the right hold as they dry. “You can either air dry or diffuse curls, but the best rule of thumb is to not touch the curls as they dry, or else you will lose definition,” Syfu explains. “Once completely dry, you can lightly finger through the curls.”
Layers, Layers, Layers
Outside of styling products, the right haircut can also boost your curls. Syfu recommends that for shorter hair, a textured cut is a must. Soft layers on long curly hair will add shape and movement to give curls a lift.
Color Tips
Dimensional color such as lowlights or highlights can help to enhance curls, too. If permanent color is not for you, you can apply a glaze or gloss that washes out in six to eight weeks that enriches natural tones and combats frizz.
