Rinse and Repeat

“No matter how annoying, COVID-19 is still part of our day-to-day lives, and it’s because of this that we recommend oral rinses as part of your routine. Gargling with an antiseptic helps kill bacteria and germs, plain and simple. While it’s not officially proven to kill the COVID-19 virus, it does help keep your mouth healthy and clean and reduces the risks of gum infections which can weaken your immune system. Pro tip: Try an antiseptic with teeth whitening agents as an extra perk!”

Increase Brushing Frequency

“The number-one thing I tell patients looking to make improvements in their oral health care is to clean their teeth after every meal. Most people brush in the morning and at night before bed, which is great, however we consume a lot of things during the day that are detrimental to our teeth. Ideally brushing after lunch is best, but it may not always be possible. At least rinse thoroughly with water until you can brush, or even chewing a sugar-free gum helps clean the food particles out of your teeth.”

Don’t Pass on the Produce

“My recommendation is committing to including at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Eating more fruit and vegetables keeps your teeth and gums healthy and strengthens your immune system so you can stay healthy and smile more in the new year.”

Keep the H2O Flowing

“Drink lots of water and always rinse after drinking tea, coffee, red wine, or dark sodas to keep stains from building up. I also recommend flossing every day. I love Cocofloss. It has really yummy flavors and cleans exceptionally well.”

Use a Water Flosser

“My favorite home care tool beyond simple floss and a toothbrush is a Waterpik, or other similar irrigation devices. The focused water spray is powerful and can be directed precisely between the teeth, flushing out food particles and bacteria. Floss is often underutilized or used incorrectly, as many people complain of difficulty reaching areas in the back of the mouth or that their teeth are too close together. A Waterpik is a quick way to accomplish a good portion of the job without being so technique sensitive. Using plain water in these devices is effective in neutralizing the acids generated by the bacteria in plaque that can cause tooth decay.”

Invest In a Better Brush

“I recommend the Sonicare toothbrush for all my patients. It removes plaque much better than manual toothbrushes and other power toothbrushes. The Sonicare promotes healthy gums, along with flossing, and helps keep teeth clean and bright.”
