Exercising Your Skin

It’s important to exercise our skin, just like we exercise our bodies, to keep it young and in shape. Of course, the way to give skin a workout is not the same as going on a jog. Instead, its called “controlled traumatization.” It’s the same concept as traumatizing a muscle to build it up.

The way to do this is to drop pH levels in your skincare regimen about three times a week. That means using cleansers, toners, masks, and other products with hydroxy acids in them on “workout days.” Acid means things are moving (just like the lactic acid that builds up while lifting weights). But in our skin, it means moving skin cells: sloughing off dead ones, encouraging new cell growth, and stimulating collagen and elastin production. This controlled disruption of the stratum corneum layer of the skin is an amazing anti-aging technique.

Other ways to exercise the skin without the use of hydroxy acids are microdermabrasion, using a dry brush, and using a washcloth. However, using products with a lower pH maximizes the benefits, as does simultaneously nourishing your body and skin with vitamins and minerals.
