We all know exercise is important. Not only does it keep your heart healthy and your body flexible and functioning, it helps you keep a trim physique. But for women who choose liposuction as a way to finally forge themselves of stubborn fat deposits not responsive to exercise alone, working out is extremely important, says a new study.
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that after liposuction there could be an increase in intra-abdominal fat, the fat located deep inside the abdomen between the internal organs, if the patient doesn’t exercise following surgery.
The findings were based off of previously sedentary, normal-weight women who had removed a small amount of superficial belly fat through liposuction. Researchers split the women into two groups, two months after their procedures, and had one group work out three times a week and one group stay sedentary.
After four months on the program, the women who had not exercised still had flatter bellies, but were showing a 10 percent increase, on average, of intra-abdominal fat, while the women who worked out regularly experienced no such gain. Concluding in the journal that, “abdominal liposuction does not induce regrowth of fat, but it does trigger a compensatory increase of visceral fat, which is effectively counteracted by physical activity.”
It’s important to note that the ideal candidate for liposuction is already at a normal weight and exercises regularly. Liposuction is not a quick fix for weight loss. “Liposuction is definitely a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-reduction procedure,” says Houston plastic surgeon Norman Rappaport, MD. Therefore it’s only meant to treat “trouble areas” that don’t respond to diet and exercise. “I generally see the best results in people with very localized, exercise-resistant fatty deposits,” says Louisville, KY, plastic surgeon M. Bradley Calobrace, MD.
So if you do opt for liposuction, remember how important it is to maintain your already active lifestyle after the procedure.
