What does an artist who specializes in special-effects makeup rely on for taking it all off at the end of the day? TikTok star Emma Norton says it’s a question she gets posed a lot and, with the season of spooky makeup in full effect, we asked the Denver native to download us on her very best skin-saving, makeup-removing secrets. (Bonus: She even has some easy-to-follow tips for us mere mortals to replicate some of her very best creative moves.)

Clean Slate: “My go-to skin care routine to remove my makeup is using lots of baby wipes (for sensitive skin). You can’t imagine the number of packages that I can use in a given week. If my makeup look was really heavy duty—for example, where I use glue and/or prosthetics, I will use my baby wipes along with a gentle cleanser and wet washcloths to remove it. Pretty basic, right? When I need help with the occasional skin flare-up, my go-to for spot treatments is Clean & Clear ($7).”

Makeup Musts: “I have so many favorite makeup products! This question is actually hard to answer. I really like Morphe’s Avani collab and use it all the time! I am crazy about Patrick Starr’s lashes, and really like his tinted moisturizer.”

Replicate This: “A really easy Halloween idea is to use your eyeliner and create a spider web. I like to draw the webs around my eyes, but you can do it anywhere on your face. Using colored contact lenses is another spooky idea. You just have to be careful because you can’t always see so well with the lenses in! Lastly, you can create a scar look on your face by using a red makeup and highlighting it with white inside the scar to create a realistic effect.”

Inspiration Station: “It’s funny, but I have no shortage of ideas. What’s hardest for me is to pinpoint which look I should execute. I get my inspiration from pop culture and movies…I just did Mufasa from The Lion King. Of course, I put my unique spin on the characters! I also love iconic celebrity figures, like Lady Gaga, along with a bunch of favorite cosplay characters.”
