Dark leg veins seem to pop up out of nowhere. They don’t look lumpy and they aren’t raised but they seem to make their way around the leg. They are small and in concentrated areas but still noticeable. It’s normal to want them gone.
Dark veins that run down the backside, or even front side, of your legs are nothing more than enlarged veins. “They pose no health threat but they can be a sign of underlying incompetence of larger veins,” says Las Vegas dermatologist Dr. Alison Tam, adding that they form due to weakened valves that force the blood to flow only one way. Since the blood cannot move properly, resulting from pregnancy, hormones, standing on your feet for too long or just genetics, it pools in the legs and that along with pressure causes a darkening on the surface. Other causes of spider veins are trauma, incompetent large veins, heart conditions, excessive standing or sitting, pregnancy, weight gain and a genetic predisposition to their development.
An easy way to prevent varicose and spider veins is by taking a supplement with vitamins C and E and zinc and loading up on complex carbs, berries and leafy greens. Products like vein-reducing cream and compression stockings can also help.
Using a tiny needle and a medical solution of salt or Asclera (polidocanol), sclerotherapy is the most effective way to eliminate unwanted veins in the legs permanently. “Even though there are different agents that can be injected, the end point and goal are the same,” says Dallas dermatologist Mary Hurley, MD. “The injecting agent forces the walls of the broken blood vessels to become irritated, in turn collapsing them and making them less visible,” she says. The procedure is safe, but you may need a few sessions to achieve optimal results. “Many studies have shown that sclerotherapy is still superior to laser therapy for spider veins but this doesn’t necessarily apply for varicose veins,” says Dr. Tam.
