You’ve probably seen (and shopped) the E.L.F. section of your local Target—you know, the one with hard-to-beat price tags and the surprisingly high quality—but what you may not know is what’s been in the secret compartment of the brand’s coveted Moisturizing Lipsticks ($3) all along. What may just look like a small square of color at the base of each lipstick turns out to be something even better. Twitter user @spoppykitten was the first to realize these tubes had more to offer, tweeting that the bottom of the fan-favorite lipsticks pop off and are extra lip balms.

But, according to E.L.F., the hidden compartment isn’t a lip balm; it’s an extra little dose of the actual lipstick itself for your convenience and to make color matching in the store a little bit easier. “We know the best way to color match is to see the actual product,” creator director of the brand Achelle Richards tells Refinery29. “So we designed our moisturizing lipsticks to hold the lipstick formula in the base of the componentry. This feature makes it easier to color match, and we love that it’s been a surprise and delight for many of our fans.”
But think twice before you go running to the store to color-test each tube or use the extra bit of color from your tube at home. Because the bottom of these lipsticks pop off for easy testing, consider the number of people who have applied it on themselves in the store before you, and if you must, try testing it on the back of your hand, instead. Once you find the color you like, search for a sealed tube (without any fingerprints in the pigment) to ensure you’re getting a new (and germ-free) lippie. If you have one at home and you pop off the bottom to find a tested color, we suggest buying a new tube—after all, you can’t beat the price!
