It makes perfect sense that certain foods give us more energy than others since food is the body’s primary source of energy. According to New York City nutritionist Lisa Drayer, some foods, like low-fat yogurt, are healthy and energizing and won’t cause you to “crash” after eating them.
“Energy levels drop around 3 pm because you’re either eating too little or your lunch is too carb-heavy,” Drayer explains. Foods and drinks that are loaded with sugar can cause a false sense of energy because they can give an immediate surge but cause blood sugar levels to drop rapidly, making you feel lethargic.
“Instead of reaching for sugary foods, try a snack that combines protein with carbs or healthy fats,” Drayer recommends. To keep your energy levels optimal throughout the day, try eating a small meal every three to four hours.
“You should also drink lots of water and green tea,” she says. “Oftentimes, fatigue can be a symptom of dehydration.”
