We know that cutting back on calories is good for the waistline, but now scientists are saying limiting food intake actually slows the aging process and reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes and cancer. They already knew that cutting back protein and sugar intake (but still maintaining a healthy diet with lots of vitamins and minerals) helped monkeys to live longer-and now they know why.
Eating less actually slows down aging by keeping a certain enzyme, peroxiredoxin, from being inactivated, according to Mikael Molin of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. This enzyme, which diminishes as we age, is vital in fending off hydrogen peroxide in the cells.
Caloric restriction activates another enzyme, known as Srx1, to give peroxiredoxin a boost. The scientists found that simply increasing Srx1, without restricting calories, gave the same age-defying results.
Too little of the peroxiredoxin promotes aging and may be linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, the scientists believe. Earlier studies have shown that peroxiredoxin plays an important role in protecting the skin as well.
