As hard as we try to avoid it, nothing screams summer quite like melting makeup. And, because no one knows it better than the pros, we asked Petra Strand, makeup artist and founder of Pixi by Petra, to share her top tricks to keeping your makeup in place and looking perfect all summer long.
Lips
To prolong the wear of any lip color, Strand recommends exfoliating your lips first. Do this by swiping a cotton pad saturated in your favorite toner across the lips in a circular motion. Next, she suggests applying a layer of a shea butter–based lip balm. “The combination of beeswax and shea butter creates a base that prolongs the wear of any color you apply on top.”
Face
To keep your makeup fresh and in place in whatever the weather, Strand recommends Pixi’s Makeup Fixing Mist ($15). “I always use it as a final spritz once I’ve applied makeup,” she says, but if you want to create an extra longwearing base, she recommends misting a little onto your foundation brush before makeup and applying that way. “This makes the base more sheer and resistant to melting in the heat and humidity.”
Throughout the Day
“A translucent powder that gently blots away oil without drying the skin is the best in hot weather,” Petra explains. “Stay away from talc-based powders, as they leave a powdery buildup.” Instead, she recommends using a powder with alternate bases to leave skin matte without dehydrating it. We like Dermablend’s new Loose Setting Powder ($26), which can be used over foundation and concealer for a makeup look that stays put.
