Alcohol is one of those beverages that experts often recommend we stay clear of because it has negative side effects on both our skin and our waistlines. In fact, researchers found that alcohol accounts for 16% of most Americans caloric intake, after looking at National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2010. However, there are ways to enjoy a spiked beverage every now and then without suffering the consequences.
“Part of the problem with alcohol is the calories and for some reason these are calories many people aren’t counting,” says New York dietician Lauren Slayton. Keep in mind that alcohol is contains seven calories per gram, compared to nine calories for fat and four calories for protein.
“Then there’s the added issue of what a couple glasses of wine does to your inhibitions,” says Slayton. That means that we’re more likely to eat more and less healthy when we’re under the influence. Solution: don’t drink on empty. Be sure to have a healthy snack before you have a drink.
If you plan on having a drink, Slayton recommends nursing a vodka or tequila on the rocks with a slice of lime or lemon. Champagne is also a great choice, but be sure to keep it clean—no Mimosas or Bellinis.
“I love Skinny Vine wines because they taste amazing and they contain 25 to 35 percent less calories,” says celebrity nutritionist and author of Skinny Chicks Eat Real Food, Christine Avanti. “Their Slim Chardonnay, Mini Moscato, or Thin Zin has only 95 calories a glass!”
Just because you can’t have calorie rich drinks like Margaritas or White Russians, doesn’t mean you can’t have a delicious drink. Try Avanti’s delicious wine cooler recipe. Simply mix five ounces of Skinny Vine’s Slim Chardonnay and a splash of pomegranate juice and garnish with mint leaves. “This skinny sipper is only 100 calories! For other variations add a splash of cranberry, cherry juice with fresh sliced green grapes,” says Avanti.
