If you’ve ever tried losing weight, you know how stubborn shedding those last few pounds can be. While it’s possible to reach your goal through diet and exercise, sometimes you need a little extra nudge. Luckily, thanks the rise of non-invasive weight-loss procedures, it’s easier than ever to send those final inches packing.
However, if you’re looking for an aesthetic solution that leaves you looking slimmer — and not to mention, stronger — than before, consider investing in DoubleSculpt. This combination treatment merges the waist-whittling powers of CoolSculpting with the muscle-toning benefits of EMSCULPT or CoolTone. To give us the lowdown on this unique in-office offering, New Beauty chatted with Dr. Mitchell Ross, dermatologist and medical director at Greenwich Medical Spa (the place where DoubleSculpt was created).
New Beauty: Tell me about how DoubleSculpt was created. Where did the idea come from?
Dr. Mitchell Ross: When it comes to sculpting your ideal body, have you heard that two treatments can be better than one? Think of it this way: You wouldn’t expect to look toned without exercise, and you wouldn’t expect to lose weight without watching your diet. That’s why a body treatment that only reduces fat might not give you the shape you’re looking for. And while building muscle is terrific, [it may not give you the desired results if your muscles are hiding] below a layer of fat. To meet both of these challenges head on, we’ve developed DoubleSculpt, a combination treatment that brings together the fat-freezing technology of CoolSculpting with the muscle-toning power of EMSCULPT or CoolTone. Both treatments offer a non-invasive solution to the body’s hard-to-improve areas, specifically the abs and buttocks. These two amazing procedures work together like diet and exercise to slim your shape and tone the muscle below.
NB: How long did it take to perfect the treatment?
Dr. Ross: It did not take long to perfect the DoubleSculpt treatment because we have been doing CoolSculpting treatments for many years. And now that EMSCULPT has been out for a couple years, we know the kind of results that we can expect for our patients. CoolTone has recently launched by makers of CoolSculpting, and the results are undeniable.
NB: Please walk me through how the treatment works and its technology.
Dr. Ross: First, the patient will target areas of unwanted fat with CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting’s fat-freezing technology gives long-term results that make trouble spots a lot less troubling. Fat cells don’t like the cold and at a certain temperature they will freeze. Once that happens, your body will naturally eliminate the dead cells in one to three months or more, resulting in up to 20%-25% reduction of fat in a treated area. Then we treat the body with EMSCULPT or CoolTone. EMSCULPT is an FDA-cleared treatment designed to target the abs, buttocks, arms, and calves to create a slimmer appearance by toning the muscles below. With High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology, EMSCULPT increases the number and size of muscle fibers in a way that daily trips to the gym simply cannot. CoolTone uses Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) technology to strengthen, tone, and firm the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.
NB: What results can you expect? Are multiple sessions required?
Dr. Ross: These are body contouring and toning treatments, so patients can expect a 20-25% reduction in fat and around 16% increase in muscle mass. CoolSculpting can take from one to three treatments on average. Whereas EMSCULPT or CoolTone requires a series of six treatments to be completed in a month, and then maintenance every three to six months following.
NB: Who is an ideal candidate for DoubleSculpt?
Dr. Ross: The ideal candidate is someone who is having a hard time losing those stubborn areas of fat and wants to tone their body. However, it is important to have ideal expectations with any cosmetic treatment you undergo — that way you are never disappointed with the outcome.
NB: Is there any downtime required post-treatment? If so, what side effects can you expect and is there anything you should avoid doing?
Dr. Ross: There is minimal to no downtime with DoubleSculpt. Patients can expect minimal swelling, bruising, numbness in the treatment area after CoolSculpting that subsides within a week or so. EMSCULPT has a built-in setting that works to break up lactic acid. Lactic acid is what builds up in our muscles during an intense workout and causes soreness the next day, which means that you will not be incredibly sore after your EMSCULPT treatment, even though it is the equivalent to doing 20,000 squats or crunches!
NB: Do you think DoubleSculpt is the beginning of a new trend in body contouring treatments? Where do you think this space is going in the future?
Dr. Ross: Here at Greenwich Medical Spa, we believe that DoubleSculpt has paved the way for amazing body transformations with our patients. We are seeing long-lasting improvements that make our patients feel more confident in their day-to-day life. In aesthetic medicine, there are new treatments showcased frequently. So, it is always exciting to see what is in store for the future.
NB: What else should our readers know about DoubleSculpt?
Dr. Ross: You will begin to see results after the first treatment as EMSCULPT quickly builds the muscles of your abs or buttocks, making them firmer. CoolSculpting results are typically first visible around three weeks after treatment with maximum results at twelve weeks. From this combined treatment, you will notice that you are getting firmer and slimmer throughout the entire process. Greenwich Medical Spa is the #1 provider of CoolSculpting in Connecticut and Westchester County, New York, and we have performed more than 15,000 successful non-invasive body-sculpting treatments to date.
