You spend 2,920 hours a year sleeping. That’s a lot of time your face is on the pillow. And if you aren’t sleeping correctly, that pillow of yours—the one that calls your name every night after a long, hectic day—might be causing you wrinkles. Good news however, unlike wrinkles caused by aging, these wrinkles can be avoided with the right measures.
“Age-related facial lines and wrinkles form in predictable patterns in relation to underlying facial musculature, but sometimes we will see facial lines that are not where we would expect, in those situations, you can take a look and determine it’s from pressure on the face from sleeping,” says Boston facial plastic surgeon Jeffrey Spiegel, MD.
“If you are constantly sleeping in one direction you can get facial sleep lines,” he says. To stop this from happening—from putting too much pressure on one side of the face—he recommends his patients change sides of the bed on a regular basis to make sure one side of the face isn’t getting too much stress. Also, he says, the type of pillow and fabric you sleep on makes a big difference.
Sold in many plastic surgery offices, the enVy pillow ($199) has a curved design to make sure you are never putting direct pressure on one side of your face. It also makes sure all those anti-aging products you put on your face at night stay there and not on the pillowcase. Santa Monica, CA, ocuplastic surgeon Cynthia Boxrud, MD, has also created a similar pillow to ease stress on the face and eyes.
Doctors also recommend sleeping on pillowcases made of either silk or bamboo, as the texture is softer and easier on the facial skin.
