For the first time in its history, the American Dental Association has granted its seal of acceptance to chewing gum. Sugar-free chewing gum, of course.

The country’s largest dentist organization recently welcomed Orbit, Extra and Eclipse into its esteemed club of teeth-friendly products-mostly toothpastes, flosses and mouthwashes-numbering in the thousands after almost 80 years of evaluations. The three Wrigley gums were proven to effectively increase saliva production when chewed for 20 minutes, three times a day. More saliva means a heightened ability to neutralize and lessen plaque acid, consequently keeping tooth enamel stronger and cavities at bay.

So chewing gum, it turns out, isn’t a bad habit after all. But the jury’s still out on blowing bubbles.
