Does Your Workout Have Soul?

Does Your Workout Have Soul? featured image

When I walked into SoulCycle for the very first time, I was expecting to walk out a couple hundred calories lighter and drenched in sweat. While this is indeed how I exited, I felt like I had just experienced something that was more than your average workout.

SoulCycle got its start in New York City and has been rapidly growing ever since. That’s probably thanks to its diehard following that even includes celebrities like Jake Gyllenhaal, Kelly Ripa, Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman. The fact that you can burn anywhere between 400 to 500 calories in just one 45-minute class doesn’t hurt either.

Sure, there are a lot of calorie-annihilating classes out there with celebrity clients, but SoulCycle has a certain X-factor about it. You feel like you’re part of a community with the instructors shouting out words of encouragement and other cyclists cheering as the class goes along. This combined with the perfectly selected soundtrack and the choreography of mini-pushups, crunches and  “tap backs” all while you peddle your feet makes you feel like you’ve just attended a rock concert.

However, feeling like you just walked out of a concert does have one drawback. I always feel like I have a little hearing loss after class, but it’s fully restored after about 10 minutes or so. They do have earplugs available for you to wear during class to spare your hearing, but I personally just find them annoying.

To be honest, I’ve never pushed myself in a workout class as much as I push myself in SoulCycle. Even when I think I can’t peddle anymore, I always somehow find the strength to keep going. And I noticed that I am able to challenge myself even more with every class I take.

After 10 classes, I noticed small changes on my body. My legs seemed more toned and even my arms had more definition. Yes, even your arms get a workout in this class—there’s a whole section where you use weights! Overall, I just felt more in shape than I’ve felt in a long time and get less winded when I walk up stairs.

One of the best parts about attending a class is that you have a chance to destress. In fact, the entire space is designed to feel like a sanctuary. The dark atmosphere with just candle lights near the instructor, the motivational words written on the walls and even the delicious citrusy smell in the air as you walk in all make you forget about your worries.

I absolutely recommend you try out one of their classes. Just be warned that you may not be able to stop—not that that’s a bad thing. Just be sure to book your class in advance because they fill up really quickly.
