Patients travel from near and far to Waldorf Dermatology Aesthetics because of Dr. Heidi A. As a 55-year-old breast cancer survivor, Dr. Waldorf understands that life is not always easy, and that knowing you look good can go a long way to making you feel good. Why do you employ a less-is-more philosophy?

My goal is for you to look like you:
the well-rested, energized, healthy,
just-came-back-from-vacation
version of you. No one should see
the “work” that was done, just the
naturally youthful results. My
goal is to achieve what I call the
“Benjamin Button effect”
For what are you best known?

My patients say they trust me
to keep them looking naturally
radiant, youthful and healthy—not
“done.” I believe people should see
you, not my work. To paraphrase
Genesis, I have “an invisible touch.”
I am also known for being very
honest and direct. Patients know
I will keep them from doing too
much and will refer them out to
another physician if I think they
will get to their goals faster with
a procedure I don’t do.

I explain that when it comes to

I am incredibly lucky to be in a field
where I get to establish long-term
relationships with patients. We all
go through the same things in life
and I have the privilege of sharing
those with my patients. As a bonus,
cosmetic dermatology taps into my

What is your favorite laser procedure?

It isn’t new or sexy, but the Fraxel
DUAL performs and patients love
the results. It really was made for my
patients who did more damage than
they should have in their teens and
20s and learned to take care of
their faces before their neck, chest
and arms. With the Fraxel DUAL,
I can safely and effectively improve
the color and texture of the skin
on your face and body with little
downtime. Patients who never liked
their skin before tell me they get
compliments on their “peaches and
cream” complexion
What are your most requested procedures?

Friends tend to tell friends about
Thermage and CoolSculpting so
people frequently come in requesting
those procedures. Otherwise, most
of my patients come in just wanting to
look better. They are “tired of looking
tired” and want my recommendations
for a plan
What is the most exciting thing going on in your field right now?

In the last year we’ve seen the launch
of exciting new fillers. Restylane
Refyne and Defyne are very pliable,
making them ideal for areas of
movement. Juvéderm Vollure and
Volbella have the same Vycross
technology as Voluma that reduces
swelling and improves longevity
How do you provide the best patient experience?

My patients have so many pressing
responsibilities at home and work
and in their communities. From the
moment they enter my office, I want
them to have a sense of calm and
know they are our first priority
What is the most rewarding part of your profession?

I enjoy getting to know my patients
and sharing our life experiences.
I get to do that while also using my
mind and hands to achieve tangible
results. We all get to grow old while
looking young together!
Most memorable patient experience

One of my first injectable patients
came to me with deep furrows
between her brows and the ends
of her mouth turned down into a
permanent frown. After a year of
Botox Cosmetic and Restylane
treatments, she got a long-delayed
promotion at work—her boss said
her attitude had finally improved

I can’t overestimate the value of
avoiding sun exposure and cigarette
smoking. It is never too late to make
those changes. You’ll look better, feel
better and get more bang for your

What upcoming trends are you excited about?

I’m most excited about combining
noninvasive procedures to maximize
results. For example, I can combine
Ultherapy with Silhouette InstaLift
to reduce a sagging neck and jowls
or combine it with an injectable to

What nonsurgical trends are you seeing at your practice?

Think “Prejuvenation.” I’m a member
of several international groups that
develop recommendations for when
and how to start early noninvasive
intervention. From microdroplet
botulinum toxin to “maintenance
Thermage” and “baby Fraxel” (Clear
+ Brilliant), it’s about preventing
signs of aging rather than waiting
to correct them
How do you provide the best patient experience?

We’ve created a calm, welcoming
environment where patients can relax
and trust that they are our sole focus
What is your approach toward aesthetics?

To paraphrase Coco Chanel: “Get
all dressed, then take off one piece of
jewelry.” That’s my approach to
cosmetic dermatology: less-is-more.
The corollary comes from my late
mother: “The dress shouldn’t wear
the girl.” In other words, the work
should be invisible. I want my
patients to appear effortlessly

Career-defining patient

A 30-year-old woman with cystic
acne and facial hair fought me and
my staff about everything—from
removing her makeup during
examinations to starting medications
and procedures. Then one day, she
returned smiling and showed us a
beautiful professional headshot she’d
taken as a gift for her mom—after
years of refusing to be photographed.
We all teared up! Her anger had
been fear she’d always be defined by
her skin. We empowered her to see

What innovations are you most excited about right now?

I’m excited about noninvasive body
sculpting. We’ve been successfully
slimming down fat bulges with
CoolSculpting plus ZWave for years.
But now we’ve added EMSCULPT to
firm and tone the muscle layer of the
abdomen and buttocks for even better
results, without downtime or breaking
a sweat! These advancements don’t
take the place of the gym, but they do

What are your most popular procedures?

potent boosters for smooth, supple,
glowing skin
What sets your practice apart?

I take being a dermatologist very
seriously. That means the health
and safety of my patients is foremost
in my office. Cosmetic procedures
should not be thought of like a
blowout or makeup application,
but as true medical procedures
that happen to be done for aesthetic
improvement. That also means never
resting on my laurels. I spend much of
my time outside the office lecturing,
participating in conferences and
consulting around the world in order
to remain at the forefront of the field
How close can you get to surgical results with noninvasive procedures?

Although noninvasive rejuvenation
can’t produce surgical results,
we are closer than ever before,
especially for patients who start
early. For the face and neck, I
use neurotoxins to shift muscle
push and pull, injectable fillers to
replenish lost volume and energybased
devices to tighten skin.
Adding Kybella to slim heavy jowls
and Silhouette InstaLift to restore
proportion has taken results to
another level. The key is bringing
together treatments that work
synergistically and understanding
that results are built over time
What procedures do you do for yourself?

I’ve been using botulinum toxin
since my mid-30s to prevent
developing my dad’s forehead
wrinkles. Now I also use it for
my neck and scalp (protects my
blowout from sweat). Menopause
from chemo at 43 meant less fat
in my face and more elsewhere.
The combination of fillers and

Coolsculpting and Emsculpt
for my body restored and
maintains my natural contour
and proportions. In fact, everyone
says I look even younger now than
before my cancer! And I’m still
undoubtedly me. I want that for
my patients

Which procedures do you recommend for the winter months?

Because it’s easier to avoid sun
exposure, winter is ideal for
treatment of excess hair, wrinkles
and brown spots. Cold-weather
turtlenecks can cover swelling
after a Kybella treatment of a
double chin. Get CoolSculpting
and Emsculpt now to have a leaner
body for bathing suit season. Also,
it’s the right time for spring and
summer brides to start their
pre-wedding treatment plan!
What is the most common misconception about injectables?

New patients often worry that
fillers and botulinum toxin will
look obvious and unnatural. I
explain that it’s like a painting:
the result depends on the painter,
not the paint. Injectables are
not meant to be pillow stuffing.
I use them to adjust where light
and shadows fall on the face, like
real-life Photoshop. I blur, reduce,
accentuate and frame to subtly
highlight my patients’ features for
a natural result. That’s why it’s so
important to find a physician who
combines expertise and skill with
an aesthetic that fits yours
