Known for his use of multiple modalities and customized treatment protocols, Dr. Gene Rubinstein’s expertise spans the skin-care spectrum. His Studio City practice, which encompasses cosmetic, surgical and general dermatology and a 3,000-square-foot laser center, caters to celebrity clientele who demand a camera-ready appearance. “I’ve developed a very subtle technique with fillers that fosters undetectable results—even under high definition cameras,” he explains. The doctor often relies on a combination of medical and aesthetic therapies to restore skin that’s been damaged by acne, environmental aggressors or aging.

What makes your practice distinctive?
We take a comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation to help patients get the best possible results. For most concerns, a combination of lasers, fillers and aesthetician services are combined to achieve an optimal outcome.
What is your patient care philosophy?
Patients have their own ideas about what they want to achieve. It’s my job to listen to their concerns, note their goals, and explain to them in a medically accurate and concise way what is and is not possible.
How do you stay on the cutting-edge?
I keep up to date through medical journals and attending professional meetings, but more importantly, I am a constant student of my trade. I examine scientific evidence and learn how to improve upon what I already know. Learning about new techniques and always asking the question, “Is there a better way to do this?” is an integral part of my practice.
About Me
How much of your practice is medical versus cosmetic?
It’s about 50-50. The two play off one another, but as a dermatologist, I always look at things from a medical perspective first. It’s not uncommon for a patient to come in for a cosmetic laser treatment and during the procedure, we find, diagnose and remove a melanoma.
How would your patients characterize you?
Caring, gentle, responsive and very scientific in my approach.
Why did you become a dermatologist?
I was doing internal medicine when I realized that many disorders can be diagnosed by looking at skin, and that fascinated me. I also liked the aesthetic component; I’m artistic and the fact that dermatology combined medical know-how with artistic creativity was very appealing.
