Do You Really Need to Do a Juice Cleanse? featured image

Detoxing, doing away with toxins and totally transforming your body. The promises that go along with a juice cleanse seem too positive to pass up. But, before you jump on the juicing bandwagon, there are some things to consider, according to Miraval nutritionist Junelle Lupiani. “Our body does a wonderful job of cleansing and purifying itself on its own,” she says. “However, I do find that some people find a detox/cleanse is a great way to kick off or begin positive lifestyle changes, like beginning a healthier intake for the long-term.” Here are some of her tips for those considering a cleanse:
Be Sure Your Juice Has Some Caloric Content To It.
“Often, people go to extreme measures right from the start and begin a water-only fast that’s ‘flavored’ with ingredients like cayenne pepper, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. This type of detox/cleanse often brings about lightheadedness, fatigue, headaches and difficulty going about a day-to-day routine.”

Choose To Do A Cleanser During A Time When Your Activity (Work Life Included) Will Not Be Strenuous.
Lupiani says that regardless of if you do a cleanse for one or three days or longer, don’t expect to exercise much—you just won’t have the energy.

Remember That The Intention Is Not Weight-Loss.
“As far as weight loss is concerned, the only formula that works reliably is eating less and exercising more.”

Think Organic And DIY.
You don’t have to necessarily purchase a structured cleanse. “I suggest you juice yourself and only juice from fresh, organically grown vegetables and fruit. Each day, consume at least four 8-12 ounce glasses of your homemade juice and between juicing drink lots of pure water.”

Add In Some Tea.
“Have some herbal tea too if you’d like (ginger, lemongrass, hibiscus and valerian are a few examples of ones that work well.”

Know What To Eat When It’s Over.
When the time comes to break the fast, Lupiani suggest eating whole fruits and veggies first, and then add back other foods slowly. “The purpose is not only in regards to the short term so be aware of what foods you are reintroducing and why you wanted to avoid these foods in the first place. A detox/fast can help you be mindful of the foods that are truly good for your body and those that aren’t.”
