A gluten-free diet might not be enough for people with celiac disease. According to a new study, people suffering from the disease may be unknowingly exposing themselves to gluten via cosmetic products.

Gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley, is harmful to the intestines of people who suffer from celiac disease. Researchers from George Washington University examined products from the top 10 cosmetic companies in the country. They found that most products lacked thorough ingredient information-only two of the 10 companies offered complete ingredient information. Additionally, none of the brands offered gluten-free products.

It’s evident from the study that information about cosmetic ingredients and the potential gluten content is not readily available for consumers. Dr. Hauschka Skincare offers these gluten-free products. Check out our favorite here.

The study was presented Monday at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in Washington, D.C. Until the data is published in a peer-reviewed journal, it should be considered preliminary.
