Do Contact Lenses Serve As Sun Protection?

Do Contact Lenses Serve As Sun Protection? featured image

Switching from glasses to contacts? You should stay familiar with the feeling of frames on your face. Sunglasses are still necessary.

Although some contact lenses, like Ciba Vision’s Precision UV, absorb harmful UV rays, it isn’t safe to assume you’re in the clear and OK to go without eye protection.

Contact lenses that contain UV protection do not totally block out UVA and UVB rays (the packaging will clearly state this); and contacts that don’t contain UV protection-which is most of them-offer virtually no defense. Additionally, contacts can only protect a small portion of the eye and offer no protection to the surrounding skin, so it’s best to double up and invest in a full-size pair of UV-filtering sunglasses.
