When it comes to heat styling, the experts say that the more you can avoid it, the better. In fact, many will tell you not to do it at all. That’s because those flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers do a lot of damage to your hair, leaving it frizzy and fragile. Since most of us don’t wake up in the morning with perfect hair without a little extra help, here are some tips to help you give your hair a break from the heat.
Believe it or not, there are actually flat irons out there that use low-heat technology to get the job done. The Coolway Low Heat Styler* actually straightens your hair by adding water to the hair rather than heat. The increased hydration is what allows the hair to be styled at a lower temperature. What’s especially unique about this product is that it uses “AutoSense” technology to measure the moisture in your hair to set the ideal temperature.
Eager to give my naturally curly hair a break from the constant heat torture I put it through, I tried the system. While it didn’t straighten my hair quite as well as my high-heat iron, it would be a great tool for those who have nearly straight hair to begin with. It would also be really handy for touch-ups in between blowouts and/or other high-heat styling sessions. Hey, every little thing you can do to avoid high-heat the better!
If you’re determined to ditch the heat (as you should), a great option is to grab your favorite salt-infused styling spray. One of our favorites at the NewBeauty store in Santa Monica, CA, is Bumble SOUTH Surf Spray ($24). Using a salt-infused product is an easy way to style your hair and create a sexy, beachy look like Gisele’s without blow-drying it.
Another way to style your hair with no heat required is a topknot. Watch the video below for a step-by-step tutorial with a tool that makes it easy to put your hair up high, so you can get the look at home.
