If you’re like most, you may think you know how to best care for your smile, but your efforts may fall short if you’re not properly educated. Flossing can cause gums to bleed.
Fiction. It’s the lack of flossing that causes bleeding. If your gums do bleed when you floss, you probably have a form of gingivitis, which will go away with regular brushing and flossing.
A beautiful smile is genetic.
Fact. To some degree this is true concerning straightness and shape. Also, studies show even the brightness of teeth relates inversely to skin tone. However, if you don’t take care of your smile, it can become plagued with cavities, spaces, stains, chips and possibly infections.
Diet soda doesn’t harm teeth because it’s sugar free.
Fiction. What diet soda is lacking in sugar it makes up for in acid, which can destroy your smile by softening hard tooth enamel. In fact, a 2007 study published in General Dentistry concluded that diet sodas dissolve enamel like their traditional counterparts, weakening healthy tooth structure.
Teeth bleaching results fade soon after treatment.
Fact. They fade only slightly, but the dramatic white you see right after a professional treatment doesn’t stay like that because of tooth dehydration, which translates into a stark white, opaque look. Once the teeth are exposed to saliva again for a few hours, they will revert to a more natural hue.
Brushing harder removes more plaque.
Fiction. Brushing too hard won’t remove any more plaque than if you brushed gently. In fact, it will only leave you worse off. Brushing too hard can wear down enamel and cause the gums to recede.
