I was born in 1979, right in the middle of Sanrio-mania. Although the Japanese company was founded in 1960, it was the ’70s and ’80s that saw a huge surge in their super-kawaii characters’ popularity. That’s especially true of Hello Kitty, which has reached iconic status today.
But as cute as the famous bow-wearing feline is, Hello Kitty was never my favorite Sanrio creation. When my mom let me pick out new stickers or an eraser set, I always went with Little Twin Stars, the pastel brother and sister pair.
I wish I could accurately type out the elated gasping sound I made when I saw that Demeter Fragrance Library‘s limited-edition Sanrio trio included a Little Twin Stars Cologne Spray. Seeing Kiki and Lala-those are their adorable names-on a bottle of perfume for grownups, which I supposedly am, made me happy before I even sampled the scent.
It may seem difficult to capture the aromatic essence of vintage Japanese cartoons, but Demeter somehow pulled it off perfectly. The light, daytime-ideal scent sparkles with hints of exotic citrus. For it to be overpowering is impossible-it’s timid, playful and subtle in the sweetest, most wearable way.
And yes, there’s a Hello Kitty scent in the collection, too. (Of course!) But for those of us who loved the slightly more obscure Sanrio characters like Little Twin Stars (and My Melody!), this Demeter collection delivers a true nostalgic treat.
