If I’ve ever said I enjoyed a workout before this, then I was lying. At least, lying to myself. I made this discovery right after my very first class at Cycle House in Los Angeles. I was hooked, addicted even. In fact, I couldn’t wait to go back.
So what is it that makes Cycle House so addicting? Of course, there’s the allure of burning around 500 calories in 45 minutes and there’s also the high-energy instructors. But I discovered what really makes me count down the minutes and seconds until my next class is the music.
It turns out that the music is the key to the workout. “The music is critical, the music is what guides the students to do what they do,” says Cycle House instructor and director of training Aaron Hines.
A lot more work goes into picking the music for the class than you’d think. “Each instructor picks the music 100 percent,” says Hines. “We pick the exact flow of the music, how we start and how we finish. If we’re doing intervals or if we’re building on a hill, it’s that visualization in combination with the music that guides the class.”
The music guides the choreography of each class. The class cycles to the beat of the music and changing up the pace is what gives you that interval training that’s crucial to seeing results. “We plan a class that’s going to incorporate a lot of interval training with the heart rate fluctuating extremely high and then coming back down really low and doing it again to keep the body guessing.”
The music really does push you to your limits and it motivates you to go past that. When the class starts, I just tune in to the music and am able to forget everything else and just focus completely on my workout. I’ve even found a few of my new favorite songs from classes I’ve taken.
The music is so important to this cycling studio that they even have a “Happy Hour” ride every Friday night that features house music—and a cocktail afterwards! In my opinion, the instructors aren’t just trainers, they’re professional DJs too.
Another bonus to choosing Cycle House is that they donate two meals to those in need for every class you take. It’s basically a win for everyone. So if you’re a fan of cycling or even brand new to it, Cycle House is the place to go.
