It may seem like the most innocuous part of your beauty routine, but according to WNDU in Indiana, a consumer advocacy organization called the Environmental Working Group believes nail polish leads to health issues in some people. Two chemicals found in many polishes, dibutyl phthalate or DBP (which is used to boost the octane in gasoline) and toluene, have been suspected in causing anything from headaches to birth defects.

Many natural food stores sell nail polish free of DBP and toluene. However, some mainstream cosmetics companies, namely Estee Lauder, have taken notice and starting changing their nail polish so these chemicals don’t make it into the ingredients.

The US Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association insists that, since the FDA has continued allowing these ingredients, that they will not harm nail polish users. Europe, however, has voluntarily banned nail polish that contains DBP.
