Botox injections don’t come at a small price. Plus, the wrinkle-smoothing effects typically don’t last more than a few months. But there may be a new pill on the way that could change this timeframe. The supplement, known as Zytaze, is said to lengthen the results of Botox injections to last 25 percent longer.
Zytaze is formulated with zinc and phytase, an enzyme, which increases the zinc absorption in the body. It may help bringing out the results of Botox since each toxin molecule must be associated with a molecule of zinc. “Some studies have found that patients who take zinc supplements prior to receiving Botox experience up to a 30% increase in the lasting effectiveness of their treatments,” says San Francisco plastic surgeon Edward Miranda, MD. “Upon being injected, Botox must bind to zinc to become effective; therefore, the more zinc available in the body, the more effective the Botox treatments will be.”
But, why not just add zinc to the injections in the first place? According to the company behind the Zytaze pill, adding zinc during the lab process greatly lessens its potency and therefore taking a supplement before the injection is probably more beneficial. The company also claims alternative zinc supplements will not have the same effect.
