You’ve tried over-the-counter capsules, prescription pills, and maybe even Botox, but like millions of Americans, nothing seems to stop your migraines. However, if you’re willing to consider surgery, you may have an effective option that puts an end to the pain while enhancing your appearance.

Migraines are a debilitating medical condition that can recurrently manifest as anything from tremendously painful headaches to visual disturbances to nausea, often simultaneously. Many experts believe that irritation of the trigeminal nerve branches, some of which extend to the forehead, contributes to the onset of migraine pain; and they have found that incapacitating these branches can stop the pain. This is why some sufferers have found temporary relief from the paralyzing effects of Botox.

In search of more permanent relief for patients, two neurologists and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons investigated the effects of a browlift-like procedure that includes the removal of the migraine-triggering nerve areas. Of the 49 patients who had this surgery, 83% indicated in a survey one year later that they were getting migraines half as frequently as they did before the operation. More than half, 57%, reported that their migraines had been eliminated completely.

“Though one might not think to look to plastic surgeons to treat migraines, we are commonly involved in peripheral nerve surgery and treat nerve-related pain, so this is a meaningful addition to the field of reconstructive plastic surgery,” said ASPS member and researcher Bahman Guyuron, MD. “We’ve shown that surgical treatment of migraine headaches is safe, effective, and that this reasonably short operation can have a colossal impact on the patients’ quality of life-all while eliminating signs of aging for some patients, too.”
