There are Coke people and there are Pepsi people, but both groups are equally as serious about their relationship with the soda. It might not be the world’s healthiest drink, but it’s safe to say, it’s part of American culture. We all have that coworker that heads to the kitchen to get her fix around 2:30—one of our past staffers would only drink Coke from McDonald’s (she claimed it tasted superior to all other sources), so she would leave the office every afternoon to fill up. So with any news of big changes to either of these products, you will see thousands of ears perk up. And today, Coca-Cola announced one of those changes. Coke Zero, which was introduced in 2005, will be replaced by a new drink called Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, which the brand is calling a “reinvention of Coke Zero.”
Both are calorie- and sugar-free, but the new recipe is said to taste more like original Coke than Diet Coke. It’s not brand-new in other parts of the world, so if you’ve traveled abroad in the past year, you may have already tasted it. The U.S. debut will happen in August—as in next week—so if you’re a Coke Zero fiend, you might want to stock up.

“We’re confident our new and improved Coke Zero Sugar recipe delivers a great taste that Coke Zero fans in the U.S. will love,” Stuart Kronauge, the company’s senior vice president of marketing for North America, said in a statement. “We also hope that people who love the unforgettable taste of Coca-Cola, but want less sugar, will try it and enjoy.”
