8 Skin-Loving Cleansing Tips from NewBeauty Editors

By ·

When it comes to facial cleansing, not everything that works for your friend will work for you. Some prefer soap, but others say it’s too drying. Some like oils, but others favor creams. To help you find the right fit, we rounded up the top cleansing tips from our beauty editors, including the product picks that go with them, so you can try them out and see what works best for you.

Favorite Cleansing Tip: Cleanse with cloth alone!

Product Pick: Jane Iredale’s Magic Mitt
is, well, magic. I think it’s the perfect multitasking, ubergentle cleansing tool—no actual cleanser necessary. It removes all traces of my makeup with just a little dab of water and a quick swipe, and it’s my go-to every night. Plus, its gentle fabric is like a massage for my skin, and knowing that Jane’s mother hand stitches it herself, makes it even better! $15, janeiredale.com

Favorite Cleansing Tip: Don’t wash your eyes with cleanser. I apply cleanser all over my face, going down to my brows, out and then down below my eyes. I find doing this doesn’t leave my eyes feeling dry, itchy or red.

Product Pick: It’s a toss up between Hydropeptide Gel Cleanser and Epionce Lytic Gel Cleanser. They both do a great job of removing dirt and oil to leave my skin feeling clean, but never dried out. $44, shop.hydropeptide.com; $36, epionce.com

Liz Ritter, Executive Managing Editor

Favorite Cleansing Tip: If you are really supersensitive (like me) opt for a no-rinse cleanser.

Product Pick: Avene Gentle Milk Cleanser. It’s the only cleanser that works for daily use on my red, acne-prone skin. $20, drugstore.com

Favorite Cleansing Tip: Double cleanse in the evenings: First, use an oil cleanser to lift makeup from your skin, and then using a foam or milk cleanser to wash it away. Oils are more effective at removing makeup than water-based cleansers, so using an oil cleanser can break down even the toughest and waterproof makeup. As a bonus, oil cleansers also leave your face feeling so soft and conditioned. The second step is to use a gentle foam or liquid cleanser to gently remove anything else. Your face will feel so clean and so nourished at the same time!

Product Picks:
The best oil cleasner I’ve used is SK-II Facial Treatment Cleansing Oil, $70, sk-ii.com. For the second step, I’m currently loving Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser, $75, nordstrom.com.

Brittany Burhop, Senior Editor

Favorite Cleansing Tip: Incorporate a sonic cleansing device into your routine, but not necessarily every day. If you have sensitive skin, this type of deeper clean may be too harsh for you to use on a regular basis. Start out slow and see what your skin likes. I aim for at least three times a week, and that seems to work well for my normal (sometimes slightly oily) skin. $149, clarisonic.com

Product Pick: My skin has never felt more baby-soft and superclean than after using my Clarisonic Mia 2. I like to swap between using the Deep Pore Brush Head (when my skin is on the oilier side) and the Normal Brush Head, which has become the perfect regimen for me.

Favorite Cleansing Tip: Just like it’s important to change up your moisturizer based on the season, the same is true about cleansers. During the winter months, you should use a cleanser that is more moisturizing. I like to switch to oil-based cleansers. They keep my skin clear and clean, but most importantly hydrated when I really need it.

Product Pick: I love NUDE Skincare Perfect Cleanse Nourishing Cleansing Oil. Packed with omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, this cleanser doesn’t strip my skin and leaves me with a soft, clean finish. $36, sephora.com

Margaret McGriff, Senior Web Editor

Favorite Cleansing Tip: Do a weekly deep cleansing face mask, especially if you wear makeup everyday. It’s a great way to really get all that dirt and residue out of your pores so you can keep breakouts at bay. It’s also a great way to pamper yourself after a stressful week.

Product Pick: Bioré Self Heating One Minute Mask is formulated with natural charcoal that’s notorious for drawing out dirt from your pores without irritating skin. It goes on warm (which feels amazing!) and rinses off easily, leaving my skin feeling instantly smooth and clean. $7, ulta.com
