We’ve been loving the rose gold hair trend—everyone from Kylie Jenner to Blake Lively has been sporting the new hue—but now as the weather cools down, a new color is taking over social media: chocolate-mauve. Discovered by PopSugar on Reddit, the look is a warm, multi-tonal mix of brown and pink shades and gives the classic brunette a fresh, modern update.

“The new color trend for chocolate-mauve hair is basically adding light, subtle tones, unlike last year’s trend of bleaching out the hair and adding bright colors such as blue, green, red, etc to it, which is very damaging because you have to bleach it out so light and then add color back to the hair,” says Victoria van Bakergem, color specialist at the Warren-Tricomi Salon at the Plaza Hotel. “Now we can use safer products, such as an oil lightener, rather than bleach.”

So what should you tell your colorist if you’re hoping to achieve this look? “Instead of trying to describe the look, show them a picture of what you want so both of you are on the same page. This will also help them know exactly how much color you want to put in your hair, especially if it’s your first time,” says van Bakergem. “For this chocolate-mauve look, I prefer using foil and the backcombing method. I want to concentrate the pink only on the ends because I just want to pop of color.”

And according to van Bakergem, this color is not just reserved for the fall season. “I think this trend can be one that lasts, and if done the right way, it can look very classy and sophisticated.”
