It’s no surprise that celebrities get plastic surgery. And some get a lot of it. We’re not talking about just a nose job or a breast lift. This is the age of full-body makeovers with boom-boom curves that really make you question whether it’s natural or not.

Celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Nicky Minaj and Kim Kardashian West are known for their voluptuous curves. While we can’t say for sure that they’ve been surgically augmented, there’s been talk about it for years. But as San Diego plastic surgeon Joseph Grzeskiewicz, MD, explains, it’s not just liposuction alone (which just removes fat), but rather additional augmentation in surrounding areas. “For instance, in the case of hips (and buttocks), we would have to reduce overly large flanks, or ‘love handles,’ or abdomens in order to create the appearance of disproportionately large hips and buttocks,” says Dr. Grzeskiewicz.

So, could hip jobs be the new procedure that everyone is secretly doing and not talking about? Perhaps, but it’s still hard to say definitely so. “In order to successfully create the kinds of curves and fullness that we see in images from the Kardashians and Jenners, you have to have a pretty good amount of fat available elsewhere on the body to use as a donor for the graft,” says Dr. Grzeskiewicz. “In my own personal experience, this is most often one of the limiting factors in whether or not someone is a candidate for a fat transfer procedure: Do they even have enough fat to make a sufficient graft to accomplish the goal? If there isn’t enough fat to create increased volume or fullness, the only option really left is prosthetic implants. And that raises an entirely different set of “feasibility issues.” I think to so flippantly speak about ‘putting in this kind of implant or that kind of implant’ to create a look to imitate a celebrity can very quickly border on being irresponsible if proper consideration isn’t given to these issues of feasibility, management of expectations, and the like.”

That’s not to say that women out there aren’t going to want a Kardashian-like body and ask for a hip job. And while some plastic surgeons will perform a procedure of some sort to give them fullness in the area, others won’t. But it’s important to understand that any type of procedure or surgery that permanently alters your body requires serious contemplation. Because if you do everything in your power to get a body that looks exactly like a Jenner or Kardashian, you’ll may become a slave to surgery trying to keep up with them.
