Carrie Underwood made her first public appearance last night at the Academy of Country Music Awards since her accident last year. Back in November, the country singer fell on her steps at home, which left her with a broken wrist and face injuries that required 40-50 stitches.

For months, the country singer has been updating fans on her health and slow recovery. “When I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different,” she wrote on her site. Throughout, she’s kept herself pretty much out of public view except for an Instagram she shared last week that showed half of her face.

So when she stepped out Sunday night for the awards show with her face looking pretty much exactly the same, some fans were not happy.

“It literally makes me sick that Carrie Underwood made such a big deal about her face needing stitches,” one Twitter user wrote. “Maybe she should come visit my work where people face actual traumatic injuries that are life altering. #perspective.”

This idea was shared among many other twitter users as well.

Even after facing the backlash, the country star went on to give an emotional performance of her newest song Cry Pretty, which was followed by a standing ovation.

Underwood has not yet publicly commented on the criticism.
