We learn new ways to improve the health of our cells all the time, and now scientists at the Mayo Clinic may have come across a way to halt the signs of aging at a cellular level as well. The solution is to flush out senescent cells-those that have stopped dividing and are more prevalent in the elderly.
In a study reported in the journal Nature, scientists gave mice a drug that “flushed out” their senescent cells–similar to the way humans flush out the same cells through the immune system when they are young. The mice then suffered from less fat loss under the skin (which keeps it plump and youthful), fewer cataracts in their eyes and less muscle loss.
Experts say senescent cells can’t be “flushed” out of humans, but there may be a way to encourage the immune system to do the work more efficiently or create a drug that could eliminate the “retired” cells. The research is still in preliminary stages, but we look forward to more findings in this area. Until then, check out the real secret to aging gracefully here.
