According the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, accounting for about half of the cancer cases in the country. We know protecting our skin from the sun is a serious matter, but we didn’t know that wearing baseball hats and flip-flops could put us at risk!
A recent news release from the dermatology division at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., reveals that since skin cancer occurs on the parts of the body that are most often exposed to the sun, we are putting our ears and feet at serious risk. Flip-flops and baseball caps leave the tips of our ears and the top of our feet dangerously exposed to the sun. Plus, we often neglect these areas when applying sunscreen. Makes sense, but it never really crossed our minds. You may want to opt for sneakers and a wide brimmed hat next time you’re in the sun. And of course, don’t forget the sunscreen (on your ears).
