So maybe you don’t want to think about the obesity epidemic while we’re preparing for a visit from our favorite portly, jolly, white-bearded guy-but if not now, when? Nearly every week we’re learning of new statistics that show that Americans are more than tipping the scales these days, and the future isn’t looking any slimmer.
To wit: As of now, 72 percent of men and 63 percent of women in the U.S. are overweight or obese. In 2020, those numbers will bump up to 83 percent for men and 72 percent for women, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys that looked at previous patterns and projected where we’ll be in another nine years.
So out of four of your girlfriends, only one of you will be at a healthy weight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 25. (To determine your BMI, go here.)
Want to avoid becoming one of these dangerous statistics? The good news is that even a small five to 10 pound weight loss can improve your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Making improvements to your diet and increasing physical activity are key, so be sure to sign up for that gym membership, especially post-holidays.
