Some would argue that your wedding day hairstyle is one of the most important hairstyles of your life. Not because your hair is what people will be paying the most attention to, but because over time, when you’re looking back at numerous pictures from every angle, you will care, a lot, about what your hair looks like. The moment will be captured for eternity, so why not have your hair look its best in that moment?

Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend, who is known for creating pretty, touchable styles for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, shares his best tips for your big day. Flip through, get inspired and learn some helpful event hairstyle hints.

The Top Knot

“Top knots are a trend that just won’t quit, and they’re perfect for walking down the runway or the aisle. It’s a great way to elongate your neck, or show off a really elegant or ornate dress,” says Townsend and we can’t agree more. This one seen on actress Alice Eve is especially gorgeous thanks to its clean lines and elegant simplicity.

Straight and Sexy

A lot of brides try and grow their hair out for their weddings, but don’t necessarily think about what their ends look like in the process. So if you’re wearing you hair down and loose like Jessica Alba pictured here, then make sure the bottom half is in tiptop shape. “Don’t be a bride with fuzzy split-ends. Schedule a trim three weeks before your cut, which leaves plenty of time for tweaks,” he says.

Natural Color

Not only is the style important for your wedding, but the color too. “Don’t wait until the last minute to get a refresh for your wedding day. Plan to get highlights two weeks out, or a single-process the week before,” says Townsend. You can see how subtle and gorgeous Olivia Palermo’s highlights are, which look completely natural and help accentuate her stylish braid.

Accent and Accessorize

When you are looking to glam up your style, look no further than hair accessories. Nicole Kidman recently wore gorgeous black barrettes to accent her look and Townsend says they are a great way to connect with your leading ladies at the event. “Tiny colored accents—whether it’s a crystal barrette, or a colored bobby pin—are everywhere. Use them as your something blue, or as a fun, subtle way to match your bridesmaids.”

Loose Locks

A beautiful, romantic way to wear the hair is a bit messy like Kate Beckinsale. “A face-framing tendril or a few pieces around the face look great in pictures,” says Townsend. Just make sure if you do go for a look like this, to keep bobby pins on hand as any loose hair around your face “can get limp and sweaty on the dance floor,” he warns.

The Elegant Updo

If you are opting for the big fancy updo like this one on Marion Cotillard, make sure your pins stay in place with this handy trick: “For extra security, spritz hairpins with the Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo ($5). It gives them a subtle matte finish that helps them stay put through cocktails, cake and the electric slide,” says Townsend.
