The standard for breast reduction is surgically reducing excess fat and reshaping the skin envelope for a lighter, firmer, more proportioned breast. However, research has offered evidence in favor of liposuction as a singular breast-reduction technique for African-American patients, who have a higher risk of developing scars.
A 2007 study found that patients were highly satisfied with the relief and limited scarring that resulted from liposuction alone. While this method did not always reshape the breast to a higher position, the reduction in size was enough to minimize the uncomfortable symptoms caused by overly large breasts.
Breast reduction doesn’t have to be one technique or the other. In some cases, liposuction can accompany traditional breast reduction to reduce fat in the underarm area, in the back at the bra line, or in some cases even to the breast itself.
