Braces And Bacteria

A common problem with orthodontic braces is the buildup of bacteria and plaque around the brackets. When not treated vigilantly, they can contribute to enamel damage and long-lasting surface discoloration. The type of braces you wear can also determine how much bacteria and plaque accumulates.

A recent study found that elastomeric braces are more prone to unhealthy buildup than self-ligating braces, such as Damon System braces. Researchers found much more bacteria, including streptococci, on teeth treated with elastomeric brackets, noting especially high levels just one week after bonding.

Regardless of which kind of braces you wear, meticulous hygiene is a must. It will be hard to enjoy your newly straightened teeth when the braces come off if they’re unhealthy and stained.
