We talk a lot about plastic surgery at NewBeauty-its pros, cons and various considerations. One thing we never reflect on, however, was what happened to the bras of women who had undergone breast surgeries. Whether they were having breast reconstruction or purely cosmetic surgery that downsized or increased volume, they wouldn’t be able to wear their old bras anymore, right?
Luckily, Akron, OH, plastic surgeon John C. Pedersen, MD, and associates at Akron Plastic Surgeons, did ask the question. So when he found out that breast patients were throwing away all their old bras, he started a program to launder them and donate them to women in need in various communities and shelters. Like most good ideas, this one grew. From a local endeavor in Akron, Breast Oasis has grown and is now operating in 10 states in affiliate offices. However, for anyone who doesn’t live near an in-person donation affiliate, you can go online and request a donation packet to ship new and gently used bras. You can also share a personal message to go with your donation so that the woman who receives it can also receive words of encouragement that she can look up via the website and an assigned BIN (or bra identification number). It’s an easy way to may another woman feel good about herself inside and out.
