There comes a time in the day, usually between lunch and dinner, that we want a little something to snack on to tide us over. But sugary snacks can wreak havoc on our skin and waist lines. So what’s a hungry woman to do? San Francisco nutritionist Rania Batayneh shared which foods to snack on that can also boost your skin.

First, Batayneh says to look for snacks that contain ginger. “Ginger is an anti-oxidant that can decrease inflammation and increase your skin’s radiance. As an antioxidant, it can inhibit free radical generation that can cause skin damage and aging.” She loves KIND Cashew and Ginger Spice Bar ($2) because they use spice rather than fruit for flavor keeping the sugar levels low (under five grams!). Plus, they contain five grams of fiber and six grams of protein that help stabilize blood sugar and stave off cravings.

Next up, chickpeas. They’re full of zinc, folate and magnesium in addition to being chock full of fiber and vegetarian protein. Grab a pack of Veggie Patch Falafel Chickpea Balls to top off your salad or add to a pita with tzatziki dip. And because they’re baked, four pieces at 150 calories won’t affect your waistline!

It’s no secret that antioxidants are amazing for your skin. After all, they are the key to a healthy immune system. “Having a healthy immune system keeps you energized and active, promoting circulation which is not only good for your beating heart but for your complexion,” says Batayneh. Pick up a bottle of FRS Healthy Defense Pomegranate Blackberry ($9.99 for a four pack). This drink contains EpiCor, a product packed with beneficial metabolic ingredients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. As an added bonus, it helps the body respond properly to allergens and inflammation.
Have you heard that saying, “Bag of Chips, a lifetime of zits”? While a lot of the acne we experience is hormonal, our diet also plays a role in our skin health. Batayneh says to skip the chips and go for a bag of Pirate’s Booty, Aged White Cheddar ($22 for a pack of 24). In just a one ounce serving this snack has half the fat and fewer calories than fried potato chips.

Last, look to the sea for healthy snacks. Seaweed is full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids needed for healthy and youthful skin. “It also helps to slow the aging skin process while protecting it from the harsh environmental elements in the air and water,” says Batayneh. The selenium and ascorbic acid protects the skin from damaging free radicals and the organic iodine found in seaweed increases your metabolism. Seaweed also contains fatty acids to combat skin irritation and inflammation.” To get your seaweed fix, try Trader Joe’s Roasted Seaweed Snack (99¢).
