Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits and not just because they are delicious. This headline-making fruit has a plethora of health benefits. Last time we told you about blueberries, it was because of their potential in fighting obesity. The latest headlines say blueberries can aid in preventing cancer. And with blueberry season in full swing there’s no better time to enjoy these good-for-you berries. (Plus, they stay good in the freezer to enjoy all year round.)

According to dieticians at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center, one serving of blueberries a day can help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. Blueberries are jam-packed with antioxidants, flavonoids and various vitamins that help prevent cell damage, which is a major contributor to cancer development.

An average serving of blueberries is around one cup, which only contains 80 calories. Fresh, raw blueberries contain the most health benefits compared to other blueberry products (like juice), which may contain less sugar and fiber than the raw fruit.
