It’s an endless struggle among women-those who have straight hair want curly hair and those who have curly hair want it straight. Basically, we’re often never satisfied with what we have. That’s why we turn to our tools and products to get the look we desire. So if you’re a curly haired lady trying to get a sleek look with a blow dryer, here are some tips to follow.

Since every good head of hair starts with the roots, celebrity hairstylist Natasha Sunshine Antonioni shared her little secret to get them straight. First, part your hair where you’d like it to fall. Then hold your blow dryer about six inches above your head with the nozzle pointing down towards the floor and let the force of the air allow the roots to dry flat.

While it may seem like your hair isn’t drying, it actually is. Patience is a virtue with this technique. Once your hair is at least 85 percent dry, all you’re going to do it pick up the brush and smooth out the ends of your hair.

“The key to a great looking blowout is polished ends,” says Antonioni. “When you’re working the ends, you’re putting pressure on the roots so you’re smoothing them out as you go.” Plus, when you think of someone with bad hair you think about split ends and not bad roots.

Some tools in Antonioni’s beauty arsenal for curly hair include Redken Smooth Lock Stay Sleek Leave-In Cream ($20) because it actually helps keep your hair smooth for up to three days. Just apply this product to your wet hair and then start your blowout. And while a round brush with a ceramic or metal core can help speed up your blowout, they can also damage your hair. That’s why she’s obsessed with the Ibiza Boar Hair Round Brush ($38) because it’s gentle on the hair and makes it super shiny.

“With curly hair, my general advice is to stay away from going too straight and go for a wave or curled look,” says Antonioni. “It’s really obvious when someone has curly hair and is making it straight. Hair looks healthier and looks nicer when it has a wave to it.”
