Tumeric is obviously having its moment. According to Google, searches for the spicy ingredient increased 56 percent from November 2015 through January 2016. Now a turmeric-laden drink called Golden Milk is the breakout star of the summer. The power-packed vegan beverage (that is reminiscent of egg nog or chai tea), has gained a cult following as a healthy alternative to coffee, and here’s why:

Although it may seem like the latest healthy concoction, turmeric milk has been around for centuries. Known in Eastern cultures as Haldi Doodh, the Ayurvedic drink has long been touted for its medicinal benefits. The Golden Milk latte (also known as the turmeric latte) has a few key ingredients you may already have on hand: non-dairy milk (almond or coconut milk), turmeric, ginger, ground pepper, honey and cinnamon.

Turmeric (or curcumin, the active ingredient in tumeric) has been known to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can ease swelling and redness and relieve muscle pain. It also helps with weight loss and can aide in improving digestion. The antimicrobial properties found in ginger can help prevent viruses and the plant is also a natural remedy for many stomach ailments like nausea, morning sickness, IBS and other common digestive issues.
