We were a little hesitant when we heard about one of the latest wellness trends to hit the scene, but when we heard it was praised by some of the most gorgeous celebs (Cindy Crawford, Rihanna and Chrissy Teigen, to name a few), we were instantly intrigued. Enter IV Vitamin Therapies, which offer a new way to get a health and beauty boost in next to no time. Full of questions, we sought Dr. Nasimeh Yazdani, medical director at LA-based skin-care spa Epithereal Skincare, which offers the treatments, to get the scoop.

What They Are
High doses of good-for-you vitamins and minerals in an elixir of sorts that gets delivered into your body through an IV, which is administered by a board-certified physician assistant with supervision by a medical director.

The Experience
“We have all of our patients fill out their general medical history upon check-in at the spa,” says Dr. Yazdani. “After evaluation, we determine their health status and the applicable IV Therapy, and then the treatment is administered on an examination bed. They can sit comfortably and choose to recline back, dim the lights or cozy up with a blanket for relaxation. After the session is complete, they may feel a burst of energy or wakefulness. Some people may experience tiredness as the toxins are being pulled out of your circulatory system. A healthy nap following treatment can help, but patients are also welcome to resume normal daily activities right away.”

The Options
IV Vitamin C: Popular due to its skin-brightening effects, Dr. Yazdani says this powerful boost of antioxidants (a typical session takes about five minutes with 10-15 minutes of prep time) is perfect for those feeling fatigued or the onset of a cold or the flu. It’s also helpful in supporting immune function, wound healing and detoxification. “The skin-lightening effects of vitamin C are not seen until three or more sessions,” adds Dr. Yazdani.

IV Myers Cocktail: Developed in the ‘70s by Dr. John Myers, this therapy—it includes a potent blend of magnesium, calcium and vitamins C, B12, B6 and B5—is typically used for preventing a variety of illnesses and infections, such as fatigue, cold and flu, migraine headaches, decreased mood, depression, asthma and seasonal allergies. “IV-infused nutrients help kick-start your body’s cells, which are performing below optimal level when you’re sick. The results are a greater energy capacity and optimal function of cells.”

IV Glutathione: Dr. Yazdani says this antioxidant-rich treatment is used to protect against oxidation of free radicals and can be added at the end of a Myers Cocktail treatment or administered as a stand-alone therapy. It helps remedy chronic fatigue or infections, inflammation, depression, asthma and more.

Is It Safe?
“IV therapies are not FDA-approved procedures,” says Dr. Yazdani. “There are no major studies that have evaluated their safety profile in large population. However, from our personal experience, they pose no risk or harm because we ensure to follow pharmacy-approved guidelines and standards.” It is important to note that there is a lack of clinical evidence to confirm the benefits or determine side effects of these treatments, so it is recommended to consult with your physician beforehand.

The Cost Factor
Each therapy listed above starts at $150 per session. “Ideally, maintenance therapy should continue for optimal results every month, or every two months,” says Dr. Yazdani.
